Passion-driven storytelling recognized at Leo Awards night #2
(06/03/2018)

If the first night of the Leo Awards shines the spotlight on behind-the-scenes superstars, then the second night shifts the focus to DIY indie storytellers.

Actor Peter Kelamis hosted Celebration Awards Two of the 2018 Leo Awards on Saturday night in a ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Trophies were handed out to web series creators and actors, as well as to an array of artists working in the children's television, animation, short and feature-length documentary, lifestyle and information, dramatic series, television movie, short drama, music video, and motion picture spheres.

The big winners of the night were Andrew Muir and Greg Bartels. The longtime collaborators won four awards between them for passion-driven projects that were created through or for Storyhive and Telus Optik: the series Hand Crafted (which profiles local artisans and entrepreneurs who make a living with their hands) and the short documentary A Theatre Near You - A Powell River Story, about the fight to save Canada's longest continuous-running movie theatre.

The team behind the Storyhive-funded Inconceivable (pictured above) took home the Leo Award for Best Web Series, while another Storyhive series – Android Employed – earned showrunner Jem Garrard a Leo Award for Best Screenwriting in a Music, Comedy, or Variety Program or Series. And Why Must the Sun Go Down? won two awards in the Animation category: Best Program and Best Art Direction.

APTN's epic seven-years-in-the-making series 1491: The Untold Story of the Americas Before Columbus won Best Documentary Series and Screenwriting, while in the Dramatic Series category, BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency earned three Leos: Best Picture Editing for Darren Tucker and Allan Lee, and Best Guest Performance nods for actor Lee Majdoub and actress Agam Darshi. Kim's Convenience earned three awards in the Music, Comedy or Variety category: Best Program, Best Direction (for Siobhan Devine), and Best Performance (for Andrea Bang).

Host Kelamis won Best Voice Performance in an Animated Series for Chucks Choice.
